Linn Klimax Solo 500 Mono Power Amplifier

The Klimax Solo 500 is Linn's 500-watt monoblock power amplifier at £23,500 per unit — a single-channel Class AB design built around Adaptive Bias Control technology, which addresses the fundamental distortion mechanism of Class AB amplification without the heat and inefficiency of Class A operation.

It is part of Linn's Klimax range and sits alongside the Klimax Solo 800 as Linn's reference power amplification. A stereo system requires two units. The 500 is the entry point to Klimax Solo amplification; the 800 delivers more power and uses passive cooling throughout.

Adaptive Bias Control

Conventional Class AB amplifiers operate at a fixed bias point — a compromise that reduces power consumption compared to Class A but introduces crossover distortion at low signal levels, where the output stage transitions between its positive and negative halves. The audible effect is a hardness and coarseness at low listening levels and during low-amplitude signal passages.

Adaptive Bias Control monitors the output stage in real time and adjusts the bias current dynamically, maintaining optimal operating conditions across the full range of signal levels and output power. Linn reports this achieves distortion 85 times lower than previous generation designs — a THD+N figure of 0.0005% at rated output. At low listening levels, where much of the musical texture and spatial information lives, the difference in the character of the sound is clearly audible.

The Klimax Solo 500 uses a hybrid cooling matrix with FPGA-controlled fans. The fans are designed to operate at acoustic levels that do not intrude during normal listening — the FPGA monitors temperature and adjusts fan speed in response to output power demands rather than running at a fixed speed.

Power Supply and Build

The Utopik power supply — also used in Linn's DSM source components — is fitted in the Solo 500. The Utopik uses valley switching and power factor correction to deliver a stable, low-noise supply to the amplification stage, which contributes to the measured noise floor performance.

The chassis is machined from aluminium and assembled by hand in Linn's Glasgow factory. At 10.6 kg, the Solo 500 is notably compact for its power output — 350 × 88.5 × 364 mm. It fits neatly on a rack shelf without the thermal management footprint of a conventional high-power amplifier.

Each unit carries balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, with passthrough functionality allowing two sources or a bridging configuration. Speaker connections use flexible binding posts suited to most terminations.

Who Is It For?

The Klimax Solo 500 is for the listener who is building a reference-level Linn system around a Klimax DSM or Klimax System Hub and needs monoblock power amplification to match. It suits passive speaker systems — including the Linn 150 at the lower end of the Linn speaker range — where the full 500 W is available for dynamic peaks without restriction.

Those for whom 500 W is insufficient, or who prefer entirely passive cooling, should consider the Klimax Solo 800. At the same level of distortion performance, the 800 adds substantially more headroom and removes the fans entirely from the equation.

The Klimax Solo 500 also pairs effectively with non-Linn loudspeakers — the Adaptive Bias Control benefits are not speaker-specific, and the amplifier's low output impedance and high damping factor suit a wide range of loads.
