The huge merchantman sailing in the service of the East India Company, The Princess Louisa was lost on April 18, 1743 on Galleons reef, in the treacherous waters off the Cape Verde islands, near the Isle of May. In her holds she carried 20 chests full of Spanish Colonial cob coins from the mints at Potosi, Bolivia and Lima, Peru- nearly 70,000 ounces of silver. This treasure, meant to purchase silks, spices and other valuables from the exotic East, were left on the ocean floor, undiscovered for more that 250 years. In 1998-1999 an expedition by Arqueonautas, the well known maritime archaeological salvage company, located and  recovered the historical treasure coins. Experts from Oxford University confirmed that this wreck was indeed The Princess Louisa.
