The Rega Nd9 is the reference-level crown of Rega's extraordinary Nd moving magnet range — and quite simply, the most accomplished moving magnet cartridge the company has ever produced. Drawing on decades of cartridge engineering expertise, including lessons learned from designing some of the world's finest moving coil cartridges, the Nd9 introduces a technology that has never before appeared in a moving magnet design: a Boron rod cantilever.
Boron is the material of choice in reference-grade moving coil cartridges for good reason. It is exceptionally light, which allows for faster reaction to the rapid changes in the record surface, and extraordinarily rigid for its mass, which means it bends less under load and transmits stylus motion to the generator with minimal distortion. The challenge Rega faced was connecting the powerful Neodymium N55 magnet to a solid Boron rod — a problem so precise in its tolerances that the solution required collaboration with a specialist watchmaker to manufacture an ultra-fine connecting tube with different diameters at each end. It is a detail that speaks to the extraordinary level of engineering that has gone into this cartridge.
Atop that Boron cantilever sits the same fine line nude diamond stylus profile used in the Nd7, and in Rega's reference moving coil cartridges the Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2 — a monocrystalline manmade diamond with a minor radius of just 3 microns as viewed from the top and 30 microns in the vertical. That vanishingly small contact patch allows the stylus to respond immediately to the finest groove modulations, retrieving musical detail of a kind that most cartridges at any price simply cannot access. But where the Nd7's aluminium cantilever provides excellent performance, the Boron rod of the Nd9 takes that foundation and makes it stiffer, faster, and more accurate still.
The rest of the design follows the established architecture of the Nd range. The all-new generator geometry is engineered for perfect symmetry and highly accurate channel balance. The optimised pole gap reduces crosstalk and improves linearity, whilst the miniaturised parallel coils — wound in-house using 38-micron wire across 1,275 turns — deliver a low inductance, low impedance output with vastly improved high-frequency response. The complete assembly is housed in the same lightweight, highly rigid glass-filled PPS body, keeping tonearm bearing loads low and stylus movement completely free.
The Nd9 is available as a factory-fitted option on the Rega Planar 8 at a discounted package rate — a pairing that represents one of the most complete and musically satisfying vinyl replay experiences available at this level. It also makes a transformative standalone upgrade for owners of suitable high-performance decks browsing our full range of turntable cartridges. For context, the Nd9 is a Rega 3-point fixing cartridge, designed specifically for use with Rega tonearms.
Rega's rebuild scheme keeps the Nd9 performing at its best over the long term — return a worn or damaged cartridge to us and it will be rebuilt with a fresh cantilever, stylus, and pivot pad at a fraction of replacement cost. As with the entire Nd range, it arrives in 100% recyclable packaging.
Already earning critical acclaim since its recent launch, the Nd9 has received a Highly Recommended from Hi-Fi Choice, an Editor's Choice from The Ear, and a Best Buy from AVForums — a clean sweep that confirms this as one of the finest cartridges money can buy, regardless of type.
