The Planar 6 is where the Rega range takes a significant step forward. It introduces the Tancast 8 plinth — a polyurethane foam core material derived from aerospace applications, laminated with high-pressure skins — and includes the Neo PSU as standard. Together, these two changes address the two areas that matter most in turntable performance: the rigidity and resonance behaviour of the platform the cartridge sits on, and the accuracy and stability of the speed at which the platter turns.
The Planar 6 is the turntable at which many serious vinyl listeners arrive and stay.
The Planar 6 sits above the Planar 3 RS Edition and below the Planar 8 in the Rega range. The step up from the Planar 3 involves a different plinth material, a heavier and more stable platter, and the Neo PSU included rather than optional. These are not incremental refinements; they are changes in kind.
The Planar 6 RS Edition is also available — the same platform with the RB880 tonearm from the Planar 8 and the Nd9 cartridge. It is worth hearing both before deciding; the tonearm difference is audible.
Above the Planar 6 sits the Planar 8, which introduces the RB880 tonearm and a triple-layer glass platter — meaningful improvements for those who want to hear what the Tancast 8 platform is fully capable of.
Rega's design principle — minimal mass, maximum rigidity — is expressed most clearly in the Tancast 8 plinth. It is extraordinary in its lightness for its stiffness. Where conventional plinth materials store energy and release it back into the signal, the Tancast 8 dissipates it. What this produces is a quieter background against which music becomes more clearly defined — better separation, more three-dimensional imaging, and a greater sense of low-level detail emerging from silence.
The Neo PSU is the other key contributor. Its DSP-generated 24V signal, accurate to less than 0.15% distortion, holds the motor at precise speed with a stability that the standard motor circuit cannot match. Speed accuracy is fundamental to everything in vinyl replay — it affects timing, transient clarity, and the precision with which instruments are positioned in the stereo image. With the Neo PSU, these qualities are meaningfully improved over the Planar 3.
The RB330 tonearm, dual-layer float glass platter, and EBLT Reference belt complete a package that is coherent and properly matched. The Planar 6 comes factory-fitted with a choice of cartridge — Nd5 MM, Nd7 MM, or Ania Pro MC — each aligned at the factory in Southend-on-Sea.
The Planar 6 is hand-assembled in Southend-on-Sea and weighs 5.2 kg. The Tancast 8 plinth is finished in HPL laminate in Polaris matt grey or Matt White, with high-gloss black polymer edge trim. The dual-layer smoked and clear float glass platter is precisely balanced.
The Neo PSU is an external unit — compact at 180 × 50 × 155 mm — connecting to the turntable via Mini DIN. Both the turntable and PSU should be positioned on a stable, level surface.
Lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects.
The Planar 6 outputs a standard stereo RCA signal. Cartridge type determines phono stage requirements: the Nd5 and Nd7 are moving magnet cartridges compatible with any MM phono input; the Ania Pro is a moving coil cartridge requiring a phono stage with MC capability.
At this level, the phono stage is not an afterthought. The Rega Fono MM MK5 is a capable MM partner; for those choosing the Ania Pro or planning a future MC upgrade, the Rega AOS MC Phono Stage is the natural step up — a reference-circuit MC stage at an accessible price. We are happy to advise on phono stage matching based on your cartridge choice and amplification.

The Planar 6 is for the serious vinyl listener who wants a reference-quality analogue source and has a system capable of resolving it. It suits those who have heard what the Planar 3 can do and want more — more detail, more image precision, more rhythmic authority. It is not the right choice for a casual system or a first turntable; it rewards careful setup and a well-matched phono stage and amplification.
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
The Planar 6 is available to hear in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will have it set up with a system that makes sense for your budget. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can talk you through whether the Planar 6, the Planar 6 RS Edition, or another model in the Rega range is the right fit for your room and your system.
