We fell in love with this antique piece when we found it! It is silver toned, and was produced circa 1880s 1890. This attractive antique watch-chain has a beautiful dog clip clasp and enameled dog and horseshoe fob. It is signed with a British hallmark, and 'Alpaca' - which was an imitation silver alloy in use at this time, made of an alloy to resemble silver. (Silver would have been too soft to use as a watch chain, so it is very similar to the process of using gold-filled metal). We added 5.5" of length with a new sterling curb chain to make it wearable as a necklace.
History: An ornamental chain, of various styles, attached to a man's pocket watch to safeguard it from loss and worn extended across a waistcoat (vest) to a watch-pocket, with the watch on one end and a watch charm on the other end, and often with a seal, charm or watch key suspended from the centre of the chain - in this case it has a dog / horseshoe pendant.
