This is a research and museum-quality cast (replica) of a Dire Wolf (Canis dirus) skull! 

Along with their sabertoothed competitors, Dire Wolves are one of the continent's most famous extinct carnivores. They typically grew larger than gray wolves - the largest extant wolf species, and inhabited a diverse range of habitats across North and South America. 

New research, published in January 2020 suggests that they are actually only distantly related to wolves, having diverged from their common ancestor with gray wolves ~6 million years ago!

This particular skull was cast from an individual found in the largest, and most famous, Dire Wolf locale - the Rancho La Brea tar pits. To date, these tar pits have produced specimens from over 4,000 Canis dirus individuals!

The dire wolf went extinct roughly 9,440 years ago, alongside the extinction of most of America's megafauna during the Quaternary extinction event.
